Divide Area Guide

The town of Divide, Colorado is located on top of the 9,165-foot Ute Pass and is named for the point where the South Platte and Arkansas Rivers separate. The area is known for its rustic cabins, large ranches, and gorgeous mountain homes. The town is conveniently located just 25 miles west of Colorado Springs and has a variety of attractions such as Mueller State Park, the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, and the nearby town of Cripple Creek, which is popular for its casinos.

History

The town of Divide was originally known as “Hayden’s Divide”, named after geologist Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden. Hayden was the original surveyor of the area, and in the 1880s the name was shortened to “Divide” by the settlers moving into the area. The name “Divide” was chosen because water run-offs separate to the north, south, east, and west of the town’s location.
